German
The German language has played a large role in European history and is nowadays the most widely spoken mother tongue in the EU. German is not only spoken in Germany, but also in large parts of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Luxemburg, as well as in many other smaller areas in Europe and the rest of the world – not forgetting the German-speaking population of Southern Jutland in Denmark.
Germany is Denmark’s biggest export market and most important trading partner. The German and Danish populations are similar culturally, which makes Germany an attractive market for Danish products. With globalisation and strong increase in international competition, continued success is largely dependant on a company’s ability to function on a linguistic and cultural level in the country of potential business partners.
After the fall of the wall and the eastwards development of the EU, big new market opportunities for Danish export are now available in central and east European countries. Even though English can help you in these areas, there are still several areas of this part of Europe where German is preferable. In particular, in the new German States, it is a requirement for a business connection can communicate in German in order to build up new partnerships or to function as a supplier.
German has had a particularly strong influence on the development of the Danish language, and German tuition has traditionally been part of the Danish school curriculum. Most people’s German is better than they realise.
At BLS, all courses are initiated with a careful test of each participant’s previous knowledge as well as a detailed discussion of the focus and goals for the course. We offer instruction in both business German and general German – according to individual needs – and we also recognise the importance of including some cultural awareness so that you will gain an insight into the significant differences and similarities.
BLS can also offer linguistic and cultural preparation for the entire family prior to expatriation to a German-speaking country.
