Other Language Courses Prior to Expatriation
Even if you are relocating to a country where English is widely spoken, it is still important to make strenuous efforts to acquire the local language. It will help you to build up a rapport with your work colleagues - if you can communicate in the native language, small talk and informal conversations during break and lunch times will become accessible.
You will also become much more integrated with the local community and able to participate much more easily in local events, clubs and societies. Even in a country such as Denmark where the vast majority of natives can communicate in English, foreign expatriates will say time and time again how their experience of living here changed dramatically once they had begun to master the Danish language.
Finally, in some places it is important to remember that those who have trained in certain key professions, doctors, for example, may have dropped language studies at an early age in order to focus on the scientific subjects, meaning that communication with hospitals and family doctors can sometimes present problems.
BLS would be delighted to assist you and your family in an introduction to the new language. Courses will generally focus on acquiring some basic phrases to allow you to be friendly and polite from the moment you arrive in your new home and start meeting people. However, if you require something with focus on a specific area, we would also be happy to help. As all our teachers are native speakers, many people find this type of course to be the ideal opportunity to ask questions regarding cultural, social and even legal issues related to the move and the new country.
